Sensei Gralyn Harris

Dynamic Offense: Mastering Hand Attacks, Set Ups, and Kuzushi for Throws and Submissions


Gralyn Harris, a State Open champion at Holy Cross in Waterbury in 1976, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years in the U.S. Army's Military Intelligence Unit, earning the Legion of Merit medal. He is a multilingual educator proficient in Arabic, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Amharic.

As a coach, he taught wrestling at the Waterbury YMCA and helped establish judo clubs at the University of Connecticut and in California. He represented the U.S. in judo at the 1979 Pan-American Games, served as vice president of the National Collegiate Judo Association, and coached Yemen's national judo team.

Currently, Gralyn coaches wrestling at Evans High School in Georgia.

Sensei Daniel Pensabene

Dynamic Jujitsu: Flowing Transitions and Bone Manipulation Techniques in Standing Combat

Sensei Daniel Pensabene boasts a diverse background, holding a BA and MPA from Brooklyn College CUNY. He served as Director at the NYC Department of Correction from 1984 to 1987, then as a Court Monitor for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of NY from 1987 to 1991. During his tenure at the NYC Department of Correction from 1974 to 1991, he underwent various leadership trainings. Daniel also taught inner-city at-risk students in the AZ School System from 1992 to 1995.

In martial arts, Daniel trained in Boxing with Golden Gloves from 1969 to 1971 and pursued Shotokan Karate, specifically the Hoteikan System of Martial Arts, from 1984 to 2024. He attained significant ranks, achieving Shodan in the Hoteikan System in 1991 and Rokudan in 2018. Daniel played a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining Hoteikan's presence in Arizona, conducting Groundwork Clinics and Self Defense Seminars at the Scottsdale Martial Arts Center.

Sensei Thomas Carrano

Revitalizing Traditional Karate Forms: Applying Timeless Techniques in Modern Practice

Shihan Carrano is the Chief Instructor at Hoteikan's Brooklyn location, boasting an 8th Degree Black Belt in Hoteikan Martial Arts and a U.S.J.A. Black Belt. With over 25 years of teaching experience, he leads classes and mentors students at all levels, including the Black Belt class and instructors/leadership program. He's a skilled Karate and Jujitsu practitioner, respected for coaching champions at Regional, National, and World Championship levels. Beyond martial arts, Shihan Carrano is also a licensed Massage Therapist specializing in Shiatsu and has a rich background in transit and leadership roles.
